2 Corinthians 1:21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has Anointed us is God

The word anointing is often misunderstood among believers. The Anointing of God is given to people by the Holy Spirit. While we can anoint objects or other people with oil for healing or deliverance, we cannot impart any Power of God to anyone. This is the Work of the Holy Spirit of God alone.

Like so many other words, Anointing has several meanings. To Anoint with oil is the action taken when praying over something to drive off evil spirits and spiritually purify that place or object. It is an act of consecrating that place or object to God for His Purpose. We find this in the Old Testament. The Lord instructed them to make Anointing Oil and how to use it. With it you shall anoint the Tabernacle of meeting and the Ark of the Testimony. (Exodus 30:26)

In the Old Testament, everything to be used for God had to be Anointed with oil to consecrate it to the Lord. However, we do not find this in the New Testament. Jesus brought with Him a New Purpose and meaning for the word Anointing and it is representative of the Work of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit Anointing Him. The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has Anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, (Luke 4:18) The Holy Spirit Anointed Jesus for Ministry and the Holy Spirit alone has been given the Authority to do this. Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has Anointed us is God,

(2 Corinthians 1:21)

We are called to Anoint people with oil to bring about healing. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, Anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. (James 5:14)

No person (as powerfully Gifted as they may be) has the authority or ability to Anoint another person to empower them for ministry. Beware of people who minister in this capacity because, in my opinion, they are false teachers. This is the Work of the Holy Spirit alone. The true definition of Anointing is To be empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfill God’s Purpose for your life.

I encourage you to do a word search for the word anoint in the New Testament and come to your own conclusions on this. I welcome your findings.

God’s Anointing will….….turn the tide
