Acts 11:26 And the Disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

We read in the 11th Chapter of Acts that Barnabas went from Antioch to Tarsus looking for Paul (Saul). Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul. (Acts 11:25) It is believed that this happened in the year 43 A.D. which was ten years after the Crucifixion of Christ. We don’t know if Barnabas went by boat or land but in any case, it was a rather lengthy trip as Tarsus is approximately 80 miles from Antioch (by land).

God used Barnabas in a great way. His obedience to the Voice of the Holy Spirit was amazing and few others in the Bible can compare to him. He made the trip and then began to search the city of Tarsus for Saul.

The Bible tells us that he found Saul and together they returned to Antioch. And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the Church, and taught much people. And the Disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. (Acts 11:26)

The Holy Spirit had revealed to Saul the New Covenant which we know as the Gospel of Christ and the Message of the Cross. When Barnabas and Saul began to preach this message in Antioch many people were Saved and became Disciples (followers) of Christ.

It was in Antioch at this time that followers of Christ were first known as Christians. The name Christian in the Greek Language actually means Follower of Christ. Prior to this, they had been called various things like brethren, Saints, believers, followers, Disciples, etc. From this time forward, they would all be called Christians and so it is to this day.

It is not known who actually came up with the name, but historians believe that it came from those who did not believe in Christ. It is written that they called believers Christians because Christ was all they talked about. These people stood out from the average person and were easily identified by their speech and actions.

If this is true, what an example they set for all believers to follow. Does the world know you are a Christian because of what you say and do? Would a stranger on the street label you as a Christian just by listening and observing you? Something to think about. Say and do something today that causes people to identify you as a Christian.

Christ in us will……….turn the tide……….in this world!
