Doers Of The Word

Titus 2:1-10 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the Word of God may not be blasphemed. Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you. Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the Doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

We are all called to be teachers of the Word of God and the Gospel of Christ. For some, this comes easy but for many of us, it takes tremendous faith and determination. Most people don’t feel they are qualified to teach anyone about the Word of God or the Gospel.

Please consider that we can teach anything we know and believe to be true. You may not consider yourself to be a math teacher, but most people can teach a child to add 2 plus 2. We can teach anything IF we understand it and believe it to be true.

If you believe with all your heart the Word of God to be true, you will have the confidence to teach it to be so. If your faith is in Jesus and the Cross of Calvary, you can share that faith with anyone. They may choose not to believe you, but you can still share what you believe and why.

Talking is not the only way to teach. There is an old saying that goes like this, “Actions speak louder than words.”  I can remember my third grade teacher saying this over and over again, and it’s true. The best way to teach someone something is to show them in your actions.

The great Apostle Paul’s instructions in the second chapter of Titus and copied above, are excellent. What he is saying is to, teach by example; not just talk the talk, but walk the walk. James, the brother of Jesus, said it in the first chapter of his Book, But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (James 1:22)

I have shared many times about the faith of my mother-in-law, Ruby Betts. I can remember her sitting in her chair and saying, “You just have to have faith and trust God.”  If she said this once, she said it a thousand times, but it wasn’t what she said that spoke to me. Ruby lived those words every day. She lived by faith and set the example for me and everyone who knew her. She was a doer, not just a talker.

God calls us all to be doers of the Word. Let us strive to live our lives in such a manner that others will see Jesus in us and believe! Today is the day to start doing what we have been talking about. God, grant us the faith to be doers of your Word!

God can……..turn the tide

Thank you Jesus,      Doreen
