John 8:36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

 

The earthquake that shook the prison that night was a supernatural happening. Nothing about it was like a normal earthquake. Luke called it an earthquake because it was a shaking of the ground, but the results of the shaking were not like that of the average earthquake. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s hands were loosed. (Acts 16:26)

 

Yesterday, we drew attention to the fact that while the foundations of the prison were shaken, the walls did not fall and cave in on the prisoners. The next thing we see is that all the doors were opened. In a normal earthquake, some doors may fly open but others will be jammed shut. In this case, every door in the prison just came open. This was done by the Miracle Hand of God.

 

In addition, everyone’s hands were loosed. This was still another Miracle! All the prisoners were not only locked in the prison cells, their hands were chained to the walls. When God shook that prison that night, the chains simply fell off the hands of every prisoner. Not just one prisoner, or a few of them, ALL OF THEM. Every chain fell from the hands of the prisoners to the floor. This could only be the Hand of God at work!

 

The spiritual application of this is tremendous! As we discussed a couple of days ago, the prison represented the lost world controlled by Satan. It was dark and damp. Everyone in it was in total bondage to sin. However, when Paul and Silas entered the prison everything changed. They did not respond to their condition and situation like the other prisoners did. They prayed and sang praises to God. They could do this because of the Joy of the Lord that was within them due to their faith in Christ and Him Crucified.

 

Paul and Silas are representative of Christ and His Finished Work on the Cross. They brought Light to the dark prison just as Jesus brings Light to this dark world. When their praises went up to God in Heaven in faith, He responded by shaking the prison just as He shook the gates of Hell when Jesus went to the Cross. Then, behold, the veil of the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; (Matthew 27:51-52)

 

When Jesus said It is finished. and gave up His Spirit, the earth shook! Miraculously, the veil in the Temple was torn in two giving all people full access to the Holy of Holies for the first time. All sin had been Atoned for by the precious Blood of Christ and the spiritual chains of bondage were loosed from us all!

 

Free at last, free at last. Thank God I am free at last!
