Godly Sorrow

2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to Salvation.

The Gospel of Christ will bring people into a state of godly sorrow. When they understand that God loves them so much that He sent His Only Son to die on the Cross of Calvary for them, they will experience godly sorrow.

Everyone longs to be in right standing with God. But, sin is the problem in our lives. God hates sin and He cannot be around it. Sin leads to death. The wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23) God provided a Remedy for all sin. Jesus is that Remedy. He went to the Cross to pay God’s required price for all the sins in the entire world.

Jesus paid for your sin and He paid for my sin. He paid with His Life. He paid with His Perfect Blood. He literally shed His Blood and gave His Life so you and I can be saved and not have to suffer eternal damnation. When we come to a full understanding of this, we will experience godly sorrow. We will feel absolutely horrible for everything we have done and at the same time, want to live the rest of our lives pleasing to God.

Most people understand godly sorrow because they know in their heart of hearts that they are a sinner and have failed God. A very good example of godly sorrow is found in Psalm 6:6 when David wrote of his godly sorrow. I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. This is a plea for God’s Mercy.

We also see this in the New Testament when Peter denies Christ. Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly. (Matthew 26:74-75) Peter’s weeping was an expression of his godly sorrow.

The Apostle Paul also expressed his godly sorrow in his letter to the Romans. O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? (Romans 7:24) In the very next verse, Paul states the answer to his own question. Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! (Romans 7:25)

Godly sorrow will be the result of the conviction we feel because we have offended God and failed Him. It is also known as godly grief because it is the product of being deeply grieved in our spirit. It is overwhelming shame and guilt that can only be resolved by the Love, Forgiveness, and Mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Godly sorrow is the Work of the Holy Spirit to bring us to a place of Repentance and Salvation. This is the single most powerful and wonderful of God’s Miracles. To bring a wretched sinner to godly sorrow. Only God can do this and He wants to do it in the life of every person on earth.

Only God can……..….turn the tide

Thank you Lord for godly sorrow,         Doreen
