James 4:14 For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

The Epistle of James is rarely used as a text for sermons because James was a very direct person. He knew what he thought and he wrote what he thought. He was a man of few words but extremely precise and direct with his words. In short, James was not diplomatic. He told it the way it was. Therefore, few preachers use his writings for fear of offending someone.

Personally, I like James. That’s probably because I’m like that too. I don’t try to offend people, but I simply tell the Truth and the Truth of the Word of God is often offensive. For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

In the 4th Chapter of the Book of James, he wrote Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit.” Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. (James 4:13-14)

In a nutshell, James is warning God’s people to not make their own plans but to hear the Voice of the Lord and be obedient to Him. Life is short. It is like a vapor; here today and gone tomorrow. Therefore, seek the Will of God for your life, not large monetary gains and material goods. Do what God Almighty created you to do. Walk in your own calling. Be who God created you to be and do it all for the Glory of God.

If you are saved, deep down in your heart you know that God has a Plan for your life. If you need more details about His Plan, spend time in prayer and seek Him for more. He will give you exactly what you need to know for today. He may or may not show you the long-term plan. That doesn’t matter. Do what the Lord gives you for today. Be faithful today. We are not guaranteed tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. (James 4:14)
