Seek Sound Doctrine

1 Timothy 1:3-4 As I urged you when I went to Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, nor give head to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.

Timothy was like a son to the Apostle Paul. He traveled and ministered with Paul until he went to Macedonia. At that point, Timothy remained in Ephesus to minister there. Later, when Paul was imprisoned in Rome, Timothy continued their work. It was during his imprisonment that Paul wrote two letters to Timothy that are included in the New Testament.

The Holy Spirit inspired Paul about what to write to Timothy. These two letters, while short, are packed with good advice for every Christian. Like all of Paul’s writings, these letters are filled with warnings and instructions about life and ministry. Everyone (especially those in ministry) would be well advised to read and study 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy.

Paul begins his first letter to Timothy with a strong warning about those who teach false doctrine. He encouraged Timothy to stay strong in his faith and only preach and teach the true Doctrine of the Gospel of Christ. As I urged you when I went to Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, nor give head to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. (1 Timothy 1:3-4)

Paul went on to identify those who do not teach sound doctrine. The law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious Gospel of the Blessed God which was committed to my trust. (1 Timothy 1:9-11)

People who practice such lifestyles will teach false doctrine. You cannot be sold out to the ministry of the Gospel of Christ and live an evil lifestyle. Jesus taught about this in the Sermon on the Mount, You shall know them by their fruit. (Matthew 7:16)

Pay attention to how people live their lives outside of Church. The warnings are clear and we would be wise to heed these warnings. Seek true, sound Doctrine. You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free. (John 8:32)
