1 Kings 3:5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.”
Solomon had just sacrificed a thousand lambs for the sins of his people. This must have taken several days to do, but Solomon placed all his faith and trust in God's Sacrificial Redemption Plan, so he saw it through until the last lamb was sacrificed.
Due to his obedience, God spoke to Solomon in a dream and said, “Ask what I shall give you.” What an opportunity for Solomon! ! ! Just imagine if God Almighty spoke those words to you. What would you ask for? Solomon could have asked for health, wealth, land, or anything in this world, but he did not.
Solomon was only about twenty years old at this time and yet he was extremely mature in his faith and loved God with all his heart. He had been made King over the great multitude of God’s People and even at the young age of twenty, he understood the responsibility that came with this high position.
Solomon was a very special young man. He was chosen by God and gifted with great humility and mercy. His response to God question, “Ask what I shall give you.” is amazing. He said, “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore, give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil.”
What an example Solomon is to all of us. He was King but he called himself, a little child who did not know how to go out or come in, In reality, Solomon was quite mature for his age. He wanted to be a good King and fair with the people, and he knew the only way he could accomplish that, would be to be able to discern between good and evil.
Most people think Solomon asked for wisdom, but actually, it was the gift of Discernment of Spirits. that I may discern between good and evil. This is one of the greatest Spiritual Gifts, and one that we should all ask God for. for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. (1 Corinthians 12:8-10)
Solomon is known as the wisest man to ever live. When God allowed him to ask for anything in the world, humbly he asked for the ability to discern the spirits. Let us follow his example and seek not the things of this world but the greater Gifts of God.
Only God can…….turn the tide
