Son Of Man

Luke 12:8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess Me before men, him shall the Son of Man also confess before the Angels of God:

Yesterday, we studied the Name/Title given to Jesus SON OF DAVID. The genealogies given in Matthew 1:2-16 and Luke 3: 23-38 prove Jesus to be a direct descendent of David who was a direct descendent of Abraham. As stated yesterday, this is important because it is the fulfillment of Prophecy.

The Name/Title SON OF MAN is also given to Jesus and declares Him to be a person. The term is used many times in the Old Testament and simply means human being. The term is translated from the Hebrew word ben-adam and the Aramaic word bar-adam. Both are translated as SON OF MAN. The term relates to humanity as opposed to deity and makes reference to the weakness and frailty of people.

The people alive at that time, and living in that area knew Jesus was a human being. They knew His earthly parents, Mary and Joseph. They watched Him grow up as a child; the son of a carpenter. Therefore, He was referred to as SON OF MAN (a human being) many times and in fact, Jesus referred to Himself as SON OF MAN. And He said to him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, hereafter you shall see Heaven open, and the Angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. (John 1:51)

Ezekiel speaks of himself using the term son of man 94 times in his Prophesies. In doing this, Ezekiel proclaims himself to be but a mere human being, weak and frail, but called by God to be a Prophet. The Holy Spirit visited Ezekiel many times and used this son of man to bring forth the Word of God to the people.

SON OF MAN is a title of humility. Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity, left Heaven and all its Glory and took on human flesh. He was born in a manger and grew up a peasant. He set aside His Deity and became a human being; the SON OF MAN.

Jesus lived a poor life. He had no home. Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. (Luke 9:58) He ate and drank with sinners. The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners! (Matthew 11:19) He suffered greatly at the hands of men. But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but said to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands. (Matthew 17:12) He willingly did all this out of His great love for all of mankind.

It was very important that Jesus declare Himself to also be SON OF MAN. However, Jesus was not an ordinary human being. He was not just a son of man like every other human being. He was THE SON OF MAN! He was the Word of God made manifest in the flesh! And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:14)
