Philippians 1:27-28 Only let your conduct be worthy of the Gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the Gospel, and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of Salvation, and that from God.
The Apostle Paul loved the Philippians and wrote to them while he was in prison. In this portion of his letter, he exhorts them to live their lives worthy of the Gospel of Christ. He realized he may never see them again so this letter was to encourage them to stay strong in their faith and not be frightened by their adversaries.
Paul had suffered greatly for the Cause of Christ and he makes it clear that the Philippians and all true believers will do the same. The adversaries of the early believers were fierce and sought to destroy the Church but Paul wrote, stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the Gospel, and not in any way terrified by your adversaries,
The few words that complete this sentence are powerful and we must hold fast to this truth. Paul wrote, and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of Salvation, and that from God.
Anyone who is adverse to the Gospel of Christ is condemned to spend eternity in Hell. The fact that they are an adversary is, to them, a proof of perdition. Perdition is defined as, eternal damnation. The actions of anyone who is adverse to the Gospel of Christ is proof of their eternal destination; Hell.
However, the one who stands fast for the Gospel of Christ is proof of their Salvation granted to them by God and their assurance of spending eternity in Heaven with Christ. Hallelujah!
In the world situation today and the adversaries we face, I pray these words of Paul will be an encouragement to you. We must stand fast in one spirit and one mind as we strive together for the Gospel of Christ. The enemy is fierce but we must not be in any way terrified. Their actions are proof of perdition. Unless they come to faith in Jesus Christ, they are doomed. They may win some battles here on earth but their eternal destiny is Hell.
Take heart my friends. Be strong. Stand fast in one spirit and one mind. The Church must unite together and face our adversary head on as we fight the good fight of faith for Christ. This is the proof of our Salvation.
Faith in Christ will……..turn the tide
No fear, Doreen
