The Greater Man

Matthew 12:40-42  But He answered and said to them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the Prophet Jonah.  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.  The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

Although Jesus had been performing miracle after miracle, healing the sick, casting out demons, etc., a group of Scribes spoke to Jesus and asked to see a sign.

Jesus’ response to their request was that of disgust. How much more did they have to see? Jesus called them evil and adulterous and declined to show them anything! Then He went on to refer to Himself as a “greater Jonah” and a “greater Solomon.” These men were Scribes. They wrote down the Word of God. They were well aware of who Jonah was and the Wisdom of Solomon.

Jesus reminded them that the “sign of the Prophet Jonah” was that after God delivered Jonah from being in the belly of the fish for three days, his preaching to the people of Nineveh caused them to believe, repent, and turn back to God. Jesus was trying to tell the Scribes that Jonah was a type of Christ and anyone who would accept the testimony of His Death, Burial, and Resurrection, would be saved. Indeed, Jesus was a far greater Jonah, but the Israelites would not accept Him as such.

Jesus knew Solomon was the wisest man to ever live so he declared Himself to be a “greater Solomon.”  The Scribes had followed Jesus and had heard Him speak great Words of Wisdom and yet they refused to believe Him to be anywhere near as wise as Solomon let alone the Son of God, the Messiah.

The lost world is exactly the same today. They have heard the Truth of the Gospel of Christ. They have read the accounts proving it all to be True. They have seen sign after sign and yet, they refuse to believe. Many claim to be religious, but they worship a false gospel or cult. They appear to be followers of God but their faith is not in the Sacrifice of the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

In these, the last days of the Last Days, God is fulfilling His Promise and pouring out of His Spirit on all people. The young are having dreams and the old are having visions. God is showing people signs; great signs, and yet many still refuse to believe. It’s time to believe. Time is short; very, very short. Jesus is coming back…...soon! Study the account of Jonah and believe that Jesus is the “Greater Jonah.” Read the Words of Wisdom written by Solomon. Read also the Wiser Words of Jesus and place your faith in the “Greater Solomon.” Mark 16:16  He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

Only God can……....turn the tide

Believing,      Doreen
