The Second Death

Revelation 2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.

Jesus concluded His Letter to the Church in Smyrna with these Words: He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.

The Church in Smyrna was a poor church and highly persecuted. As we have discussed for the past two days, Jesus’ instructions to them was to remain faithful through it all, even to death. This is His instructions to us today as well.

The Promise at the end of this Letter is as much for us as it was for the Church in Smyrna in the year 96 A.D. If we want to spend eternity in Heaven with Jesus, then we must remain faithful. Be faithful until death, and I will give you a Crown of Life. (Revelation 2:10) This means overcoming the enemy and the sins of the world we live in.

The last Words to the Church in Smyrna say it all. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death. (Revelation 2:11) What is the second death? We read about this in the 21st Chapter of Revelation. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the fearful, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. (Revelation 21:7-8)

My friends, sin is the problem. Since Adam and Eve fell in the Garden of Eden, sin has been the problem with humanity. It’s my problem and it’s your problem. It’s everyone’s problem. God sent the answer and the remedy to this problem. The Answer is Jesus and His Finished Work on the Cross of Calvary. Our faith in what Jesus accomplished on the Cross is the answer for our sin.

The answer is not found in Jesus, born of a virgin, Jesus the Perfect Man, Jesus the Miracle Worker, or Jesus the Prophet. Our Redemption is found ONLY in Jesus the Sacrifice for sin. This is what God required and Jesus fulfilled God’s requirement by going to the Cross and becoming the Perfect Blood Sacrifice for the Redemption of all who believe.

Faith in His Work on the Cross makes us overcomers. We will never be able to overcome sin any other way. He is THE WAY, the only Way. He said this in John 14:6 I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Me.

Sin is the problem. Jesus’ Work on the Cross is the answer. Faith in His Finished Work makes us overcomers because it was there that He defeated the Power of Satan in our lives. Jesus didn’t go to the Cross for Himself. He went for YOU and me. He suffered and died a horrible death so we can be redeemed and receive a Crown of Life; Eternal Life in Heaven. Faith in this FACT is required by God. We don’t have to go to the Cross for our sins. Jesus did it on our behalf. All we have to do is believe it.

Repent and believe. Jesus is about to……….turn the tide
