The Ten Commandments

Romans 8:2 For the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the Law of sin and death.

Born-again believers in the Finished Work of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary are free from the Law of the Old Covenant. This does not mean that the Ten Commandments are no longer pertinent in our lives. To understand this, we must understand the different aspects of the Law.

The Law addressed every part of human life and consisted of three parts: The Moral Law, the Ceremonial Law, and the Social Law. The Moral Law included the Ten Commandments. The Ceremonial Law included the rules for the Sabbath Day, all the dietary laws, the keeping of the feast days, and the entire sacrificial system. The Social Law dictated how people were to interact with each other and treat other people.

All of the Law remained in effect until Jesus went to the Cross where He fulfilled the Law. Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. (Matthew 5:17) For the most part, His Finished Work on the Cross was the fulfillment of the Ceremonial Law.

Jesus gave us the Two Commandments of the New Covenant. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the First Commandment. And the second, like it, is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other Commandment greater than these. (Mark 12:30-31) These Two Commandments cover the Moral Law (except for the 4th Commandment which pertains to the keeping of the Sabbath Day) and the Social Law.

The Moral Law is absolutely still in effect today. It was wrong to murder, steal, lie, and covet under the Old Covenant and it is still wrong to do so today. Therefore, the Ten Commandments (with the exception of the 4th) are still pertinent to believers today. They are all covered in the Two Commandments Jesus gave when He said You shall love your neighbor as yourself. If you love your neighbor you will not murder him, steal from him, bear false witness against him, or covet his belongings.

Yes, the Ten Commandments still pertain to us today. They are the foundation for our Penal Code and system of Law and Order. The only exception is the 4th Commandment which we will discuss tomorrow. The Word of God is our Standard of living. We would be well advised to read and study it.

The Word of God will……….turn the tide……….in this evil world.

I love God’s Word,        Doreen
