The Unwinnable Battle

1 Chronicles 16:22 Do not touch My Anointed ones, and do My Prophets no harm.

Saul was on his way to Damascus to arrest and perhaps murder, some more followers of Christ. He had in his possession papers making it legal for him to do this. Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the Disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. (Acts 9:1-2)

Saul believed he was working for God and God’s people. He was completely entrenched in the Jewish religion and Law and had devoted his life to destroying anything and anyone who came against it. In this case, it was Jesus and His followers. Like most of the Jewish hierarchy, Saul did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah therefore, he set out to persecute and destroy Him and everyone who believed in Him.

However, Saul was mistaken and the Lord Jesus Christ paid him a visit and told him the truth. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a Light from Heaven. And he fell to the earth, and heard a Voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? And he said, Who are you, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom you persecute: it is hard for you to kick against the pricks. (Acts 9:3-5)

Instantly, Saul knew he was in the presence of God but he didn’t know it was Jesus until Jesus identified Himself by Name. He could have called Himself many different names but He used the same Name as the one Saul had been using: Jesus. There was to be no misunderstanding. Saul now knew he had made a big mistake. In fact, he had made many big mistakes. Every Believer he had arrested and murdered was another mistake made by Saul and now he knew it.

While Saul thought he was persecuting people who came against the Jewish religion, he was actually persecuting Jesus Himself Who was God! The Bible does not tell us how Saul felt at this moment, but being the most learned scholar at that time, I’m sure he was reminded of when God said, “Do not touch My Anointed ones, and do My Prophets no harm.” (1 Chronicles 16:22; Psalms 105:15)

This should be a lesson for all of us today. Anyone who attacks God’s Anointed ones, attacks God. This is a battle that cannot be won.

Jesus Christ will…..…….turn the tide……….in this world.
