Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
There is much talk today about using the Word of God in public schools in America. Most people living today do not remember the time when the Bible was used as a textbook, but it was, and in many cases the ONLY book the school had to use.
I would like to share with you a portion of the commencement speech to the first graduating class of Columbia University after the Revolutionary War. This address was made by William Samuel Johnson, who was the President of Columbia University (a public school) at that time.
You have received a public education, the purpose whereof has been to qualify you the better to serve your Creator and your country. Your first duties are those you own to Heaven, to your Creator and Redeemer. Let these be ever present to your minds and exemplified in your lives and conduct.
Imprint deep upon your minds the principles of piety toward God, and a reverence and fear of His Holy Name. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, and its consummation is everlasting felicity.
Remember, too, that you are the redeemed of the Lord, that you are bought with a price, even the inestimable price of the precious Blood of the Son of God. Adore Jehovah, therefore, as your God and your Judge. Love, fear, and serve Him as your Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier. Acquaint yourselves with Him in His Word and Holy Ordinances.
Make Him your friend and protector and your felicity is secured both here and hereafter. And with respect to particular duties to Him, it is your happiness that you are well assured that he best serves his Maker, who does most good to his country and to mankind.
I wonder what would happen if such a speech was made to a university graduating class today. Words like these empowered young Americans to love God and their country. These were not just words spoken and cast aside. These were words heard and taken to heart by all in attendance. Words like these are what young Americans need to hear again today.
If we expect to reclaim America for Christ we must speak into the lives of our children and grandchildren the Word of God and instruct them in the importance of living their lives for Christ. This is the foundation upon which our great nation was founded and built.
As a nation, we have stepped off our foundation and allowed it to crack. It’s time to repair and restore the solid foundation our forefathers believed in so deeply and gave their lives for us to have. Share the words of our forefathers with your family. Most have no idea of the strong American Heritage they have.
I absolutely believe with all my heart that if we, God’s people, turn back to Him………
He will……turn the tide
Believing, Doreen
