John 6:48 I am the Bread of Life.
There were four Feasts celebrated by the Israelites in the Spring as set forth by God in the Old Testament. They were Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, and Weeks. Jesus fulfilled all four of these Feasts. Yesterday and the day before, we discussed how He fulfilled the Feast of Passover. Today we will study His fulfillment of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
The day after Passover Jews begin a seven-day fast from leavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. (Exodus 12:15)
Bread is a staple in the Jewish diet. They eat bread every day but out of obedience to God and in remembrance of their quick escape from Egypt. Leaven is yeast and it takes time to make yeast bread. You have to be patient and wait for the yeast to rise. When the Israelites left Egypt they didn’t wait. They got up and left quickly. This is what they remember as they celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
Every day during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, they make specific offerings to God. (Numbers 28:16-25) Leaven also represents sin, hatred, and evil. When the Lord told them to remove all leaven from their houses He was referring to all sin, hatred, and evil. This was a purging or cleansing of themselves and their homes.
Biblically speaking, bread represents the Word of God. Unleavened bread is symbolic of sin-free bread which would be the pure, True Word of God. Jesus referred to Himself as the Bread of Life. I am the Living Bread which came down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world. (John 6:51)
Later in the New Testament, Paul spoke about removing all sin from our lives. This was in keeping with the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Messiah, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. (1 Corinthians 5:6-8)
I hope you can see that Jesus, being 100% sinless, represented unleavened bread. When He came and offered Himself on the Cross of Calvary to all people, He fulfilled the Feast of Unleavened Bread and we need not celebrate it any longer. Rather, we celebrate our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ who is our Passover and our Unleavened Bread, the Bread of Life. Hallelujah!
Jesus will……….turn the tide……….in your life.
