Act 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the House where they were setting.
This single, short Passage of Scripture is one of the most powerful in all the New Testament; Twenty-four words that changed the world and birthed the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
As we have discussed for the past two days, the Breath of God came upon the people suddenly and was like a rushing, mighty wind. Like so many times in Scripture, a lot is lost in the translation from Hebrew and Greek into English.
This Passage was originally written in Greek and when we break it down and look at the actual meaning of the Greek words used, we have a more accurate and descriptive picture of what actually happened that day.
Although we briefly touched on this yesterday, there is more to discover. The Greek word for suddenly is aphno which means unexpectedly. The next word that needs further definition is wind, which is pnoe in Greek and means breath. The Morning Message yesterday went into great detail on this word but suffice it to say that it means the Breath of God.
Next, we have the word rushing which in the Greek language is phero. It means to be driven or to rush. The word mighty carries with it the meaning of violence. This has to do with the Power and Authority over demonic spirits and darkness due to the Victory Jesus won on the Cross of Calvary.
The last phrase, and it filled all the House where they were setting means exactly what it says. The Glory and Presence of the Holy Spirit filled the entire House. No one could escape it and no one was left untouched by Him.
So, given a proper understanding of the original language, we now have a more accurate and descriptive picture of what actually happened that day at the Temple. The people were expecting something but they didn’t know what it would be. It came upon them unexpectedly. It was like a violent wind and not only did they feel it, they actually heard it. I can’t help but think of a tornado when I read this. However, unlike a tornado that destroys everything in its path, the rushing mighty wind that brought the Holy Spirit filled the people with the Power of God over all that is evil.
The Holy Spirit did not come back to occupy a building. He came back to occupy believers. He came back to empower us to walk in Victory over the enemy and every one of his wicked schemes. This was an unprecedented moment in history.
Remember what Luke also wrote in His Gospel: And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from Heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (Luke 10:18-19) This is the Power of the Holy Spirit that dwells in the heart and life of every believer. When we understand the Power we have been given because of the Price Jesus paid on the Cross of Calvary, we have no reason to fear anyone or anything. We are the Victors! To us has been given the Power to overcome! Give Him praise in your house today!
Only God can……….turn the tide
