John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My Word, you are My Disciples indeed.”
Being a Disciple of Christ is a life-long, day-in and day-out, commitment. It’s a full-time position. There is no such thing as a part-time Disciple. Jesus was perfectly clear on this point.
We think of a full-time job as consisting of forty hours a week, but not so with our position as a Disciple of Christ. Jesus said, “If you abide in My Word, you are My Disciples indeed.” The keyword here is “abide.” In the King James translation, the word is translated as “continue.”
When Jesus called Disciples He called them to a full-time position. They didn’t follow Him during the day for a few hours and then returned home to their business and family. Full-time means continuous, never ceasing, never leaving His Presence or ministry.
It only took a short time for the Disciples to sign on as full-time followers of Christ. After being with the Messiah and witnessing miracle after miracle, they would be foolish to want to quit. They were not paid, and there was no tangible benefit package, but what they received was far greater than silver or gold.
This is what the Bible says happened when Jesus sent the Disciples out to minister. Then He called His twelve Disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick. And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece. Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the Gospel and healing everywhere. (Luke 9:1-6)
And so it is still today. Being a Disciple of Christ is a full-time calling. It’s not something we do part-time for an hour or two a week, every once in a while or during our vacation from work. On the contrary. Being a full-time Disciple of Christ is a 24-hour-a-day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year position.
God is seeking those with the commitment to continue. This is the Call of God on your life. Are you ready for this full-time position? His Call is the same today, “Come. Follow Me.”
