Psalm 115:8 They who make them are like unto them; so is everyone who trusts in them.
As I read this Psalm a Truth of God’s Word came bounding out at me. I love it when that happens!
Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto Your Name give glory, for Your mercy, and for your truth’s sake. Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? But our God is in the heavens: He has done whatsoever He has pleased. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not; feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat. They who make them are like unto them; so is everyone who trusts in them.
The Psalmist is drawing a comparison between the One True God and the idol gods of heathens. We all know that to worship an idol is to break the First Commandment: Thou shall have no other gods before Me.
God is in the Heavens and He does whatever He pleases. Idol gods are made of gold and silver and are the work of men’s hands. These gods may look like a man and have a mouth, eyes, ears, nose, hands, and feet but they are worthless; they do nothing. They just sit there, idol.
The phrase that caught my eye was verse 8, They who make them are like unto them; so is everyone who trusts in them.
When we create an idol and worship it, we become just like it. Whatever it stands for, we will soon stand for it. Whatever it means, we will be in agreement. The Truth in this Psalm is that people become like that which they worship, and the people who trust them become like them as well; followers.
As Christians, we worship Jesus Christ. The more we worship Him the more we become like Him. If we were to attempt to list the attributes of Jesus we find love, forgiveness, grace, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, fairness, goodness, humility, accepting, faithfulness, generous, true, loyal, just to name a few.
People who truly love the Lord and worship Him with all their hearts will become more and more like Him. This is the Sanctification process that goes on our entire lives as the Holy Spirit molds us and shapes us to be more Christ-like.
On the flip side, we find that worshipers of Mohammed become just like him: hateful, self-serving, deceitful, with a murderous spirit. A Muslim who really worships Mohammed will become just like he was.
In the case of worldly idols, like money, the people who worship money become just like it: powerful but filthy. I will leave that alone for now, but I’m sure you can see how the worship of idols can be extremely destructive to mankind.
Remember, God created us in HIS IMAGE! We were created to be like Him not some man-made carved image, someone who failed and died or something we have dreamed up in our minds like, power, money or success.
Who or what do you worship with all your heart? Whomever it is or whatever it is, you will become just like it. That is a Biblical Truth you can stand on. They who make them are like unto them; so is everyone who trusts in them.
The heartfelt worship of Jesus Christ will……..turn the tide
