How Great Thou Art

Psalm 8:1-3  O Lord our Lord, how excellent is Your Name in all the Earth? Who has set Your Glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings have You ordained strength because of Your enemies, that You might still the enemy and the avenger. When I consider Your heavens, the Work of Your Hands, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained; What is man, that You are mindful of him? And the son of man, that You visit him?

The entire Book of Psalms was written as songs. At one time, they were all sung. There are 150 Psalms (or songs) in the Word of God. These are God’s Hymnal. God created music, and He loves music that brings glory to Him. All other music is the work of Satan and glorifies the world and all its evil.

Since there was no written music, like what we know as sheet music in Biblical times, we have no way of knowing the melody of the Psalms, but as we read through them, we recognize the Words as lyrics to songs and hymns we sing today. One of the greatest hymns ever written is “How Great Thou Art.”

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made. I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder; Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

When through the woods and forest glades I wander, I hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees. When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, and see the brook and feel the gentle breeze.

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing; sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in. That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation, and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow in humble adoration, and then proclaim, “My God! How Great Thou Art!”

Then sings my soul my Savior God to Thee. How great thou art. How great thou art.  Then sings my soul my Savior God to Thee. How great thou art. How great thou art.

The greatness of God is immeasurable and insurmountable. Nothing, or no one, is greater than God Almighty.  The busy lifestyles we live today often prohibit us from spending time in God’s Creation and taking in His Greatness, which is all around us. This is what Carl Boberg understood when he wrote How Great Thou Art.

If you notice, the song begins with the beauty of God’s Creation; the universe, stars, rolling thunder, woods and forests, birds, mountains, brooks, and even the gentle breeze. All this is the Work of God’s Hands. From there, his thoughts moved to the Sacrifice of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, on the Cross. Mr. Boberg understood that it was for his sin, Jesus bled and died. Then, his thoughts moved on to the fact that Christ will return at some point and take him home. What a joyous day that will be, and at that time, he knew he would be able to do nothing but bow before Him and proclaim, “My God! How Great Thou Art!”

Oh my! How Great Thou Art! Let us lift Him up in praise today! Take time from your busy schedule to visit God’s incredible Creation and commune with Him. He made it all just for you. His Son died….just for you.  He is coming back…...just for you. How great is that?

God is great! Only He can……..turn the tide

Just for me,      Doreen
