Passover

1 Corinthians 5:7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

One of the many Names/Titles for Jesus in the Bible is our PASSOVER. The Apostle Paul gives Him this Title in his letter to the Corinthians. It seems that the Church at Corinth had been infiltrated with sin of the worst kind. Paul addresses the situation and instructs the leaders of that Church on how to proceed in this matter. (1 Corinthians 5:1-6)

Then in Verse 7, Paul writes Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. To understand this we must first understand the Jewish Law regarding sin.

We must remember that Jesus was a Jew. He came to earth through the lineage of the Jews and it was Jewish custom to sacrifice a lamb at Passover which occurred in the first month of the new year on the Jewish calendar. They were to bring a young male lamb that was without blemish and sacrifice it. (Exodus 12:5) This was done in remembrance of their exodus from Egypt. In those days the Jewish people put the blood of the sacrificed lamb over their doorposts so the spirit of death would pass over their homes and they would be saved from the deadly plague that swept over the land.

This Passover practice became the Feast of the Passover which is still celebrated by Jews today. They still celebrate it because they do not believe that Jesus Christ was the final Sacrifice required by God and that He shed His Blood to save them once and for all from death, Hell, and the grave.

Jesus IS the PASSOVER. He is the fulfillment of the Feast of Passover. There is no need for us to practice or celebrate the Feast of Passover according to Jewish Law and tradition as some do. When Jesus gave up His Spirit on the Cross of Calvary and said It is finished. (John 19:30) He became the Passover Lamb, sacrificed for not just the Jewish people but for the entire world!

This is why Paul referred to Jesus as our Passover. You see, there was the horrible sin of sexual immorality within the Church at Corinth and the leadership of that Church was not dealing with it. In fact, the Bible tells us that they were puffed up about it! Paul reminded them that a little leaven leavens the whole lump. (1 Corinthians 5:6) Paul went on to say Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. (1 Corinthians 5:7)

The Blood of our PASSOVER saves us from the deadly plague of din, death, Hell, and the grave. Jesus is our PASSOVER! Hallelujah!

Praise God! Only He can……..….turn the tide

So thankful for our PASSOVER.         Doreen
