Luke 7:36 Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat.
The account of the sinful woman who came to the Pharisees' house and sat at Jesus' feet is the story of EVERY truly born-again believer in Jesus Christ. For this Perfect Grace of God, let us be thankful. Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. The story takes place in the home of a Pharisee. These were the highly religious people who did not associate with common folks; they were above that. They knew the Law and the Word of God by heart and considered ordinary people to be beneath them.
Although these men were highly educated and religious, they would soon learn they were not as acceptable to God as they thought. We all know people like this. These are those who have earned their doctorate degree in theology from the best theological schools in the world. They know the Word of God forward and backward and can quote any Passage of Scripture mentioned.
They are also those who will not allow a low-class individual to set foot in their beautiful church that they have spent thousands of their own dollars to build and maintain. They are the ones who have reserved a certain pew in the church, and no one has the right to sit in it.
They are those who have taught their Sunday School class for forty years, and it is theirs to teach until the day they die. They are the ones who have given so much money and time to their church; they have the right to make all the decisions. After all, their church belongs to them. They bought it, lock, stock, and barrel. Therefore, they have every right to control it.
They are those who believe they have rightfully earned everything they have on their own. They have demonstrated their ability to work and buy their way to the top of the corporate ladder, and have done the same at their church. Perhaps you know some people like this. They are the modern-day Pharisees. They consider themselves to be superior in every sense of the word to everyone else.
Tomorrow, as we move on in this story, we will discover what happened when a certain Pharisee invited Jesus to come to his house and eat with them. Until tomorrow, examine your own heart and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you any area of your life where you may consider yourself superior to others. Pray for God to bless you with a double portion of humility. Without God, we are nothing.
Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor. (Proverbs 18:12)
