Symbols Of The Holy Spirit

John 6:63 It is the Spirit Who gives life; and flesh profits nothing. The Words that I speak to you are Spirit, and they are Life.

Jesus taught His followers about the Holy Spirit because, in Old Testament times, the Spirit visited some people occasionally. The Holy Spirit is Who spoke to the Prophets and caused Miracles to happen, but no one had the Holy Spirit dwelling in them.

Throughout the Word of God, we see symbolism everywhere. The Holy Spirit is no exception. God uses several things to symbolize His Spirit. These symbols are consistent and true to this day. Wind, Fire, Water, Oil, and the Dove are the most common symbols God uses to describe the attributes of His Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit as WIND speaks of His great Power. And suddenly there came a sound from Heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. (Acts 2:2)

FIRE depicts the purity of the Holy Spirit. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. (Matthew 3:11-12)

Jesus spoke of the Life-giving Holy Spirit and symbolized it as WATER. On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet Glorified. (John 7:37-39)

The Healing Powers of the Holy Spirit are symbolized by OIL. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:14-15)

As powerful and mighty as the Holy Spirit is, He is also as gentle as the DOVE. I saw the Spirit descending from Heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. (John 1:32)

As you read and study, watch for the symbols of the Holy Spirit throughout the Word of God. Pray for understanding enlightenment. The Holy Spirit will help you.
