2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the Truth, and be turned aside to fables.

This Passage of Scripture was written by the Apostle Paul in a letter to Timothy in the year 66 A.D. Paul was in prison at the time and he was encouraging Timothy to stay strong in his faith in Christ and to continue preaching the Gospel everywhere he went.

The Holy Spirit had revealed to Paul what the Church would look like in years to come and as every year goes by, the Church looks more and more like this. It is indeed a sad commentary, but true. Many of those who profess to be Christians do not want to endure sound doctrine. They want their own needs met and they want to live any way they choose. Their lifestyles are corrupt and in some cases, an abomination to God.

Paul used the term “itching ears.” Many believers today fall into this category. They find a “church” that preaches what they want to hear rather than the Truth of the Word of God. They look for a “preacher” that agrees with their sinful lifestyle and the enemy has convinced them that God is pleased.

These lies preached from the pulpit are fairy tales and fables. They are not the Truth of the Word of God. When God calls something sin, He means it. When His Word says that people who practice certain sins will not inherit the Kingdom of God, He means it. When God’s Word calls a particular sin an abomination, He means it.

In this same letter to Timothy, Paul wrote All Scripture is given by Inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in Righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16)

The Word of God is God’s Instruction Manual for believers. Do not be deceived by those who profess to be preachers and teachers but do not preach and teach the Truth of the Word of God. Jesus said, You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free. (John 8:32)
