What Is An Overcomer?

Revelation 3:12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the Temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the Name of My God and the Name of the City of my God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of Heaven from My God. And I will write on him My New Name.

The goal in the life of every born-again believer in Christ is to be counted among the overcomers. Several times in the New Testament, especially in the Book of Revelation, we read about this but what exactly does this mean? What are we to overcome and how do we overcome it?

Jesus teaches that overcomers are those who successfully resist the temptation of the enemy who is the leader of the world and its system. Overcomers are not sinless, but they hold fast to their faith in Jesus Christ and His Finished Work on the Cross until the end.

John the Beloved wrote on this subject. Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His Commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His Commandments. And His Commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the Victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:1-5)

All seven letters to the churches in the 2nd and 3rd Chapters of the Book of Revelation, conclude with Jesus speaking of the Rewards to those who overcome. If we are to receive great Rewards at the Judgment Seat of Christ, we must be found by Him to be counted among the overcomers.

The overcomer is the one who does not turn from God when things get tough. On the contrary, the overcomer gets more dependent on God during hard times knowing that on his own he can do nothing, but with God, all things are possible.

The Apostle Paul wrote about his own situation to the Corinthians. He referred to this as a thorn in his flesh. We don’t know what this was. It could have been physical in nature but it most definitely was spiritual because he stated that it came from Satan. Personally, I believe the Word of God does not tell us what it was because it really doesn’t matter. The important thing is what we find in God’s answer to Paul when he prayed about it. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My Grace is sufficient for you, for my Strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the Power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:5-10)

To be an overcomer is to totally depend on God for everything. It is to have complete faith in God no matter the situation. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Jesus’ Finished Work on the Cross of Calvary is God’s demonstration of His Love for us and His Grace for undeserving humanity. His Grace is all-sufficient for us. We need nothing more to be overcomers in this world. By His Grace we are Saved, Healed, and Delivered. When we place our complete faith in His all-sufficient Grace, we will become overcomers and that is the goal!

Understanding the Grace of God will….…….turn the tide………..in your life.
